Azerbaijan GP under late red flag after Verstappen tyre failure

Verstappen was denied a very likely victory when his left-rear tyre failed as he came to cross the line to start lap 48 of the 51-lap race, keeping a 4-2nd direct around Crimson Bull team-mate Sergio Perez.

The failure sent Verstappen’s motor vehicle spinning into the wall at one of the fastest elements of the circuit, prompting the race to immediately be place below the safety car.

The selection was then taken to crimson flag the race, with the cars all returning to the pits and opting to switch to soft tyres forward of the eventual restart.

It marked the second tyre failure of the race just after Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll experienced a related situation on the tricky compound Pirellis earlier on at a comparable level of the circuit.

Stroll crashed into the wall and was eliminated from the race on Lap 30, ensuing in an early safety auto.
