Sports Betting has exploded across Africa. But are the betting companies playing it straight? Do the punters really understand the odds they’re up against? And who is getting rich from the thrill of the beautiful game?

BBC Africa Eye follows one young football fan on a journey across Uganda, to find out what happens when global companies target some of the poorest and most vulnerable people on the continent.

Collins Muhinda has been betting on football since he was a kid – but on this journey, he discovers an industry that can have a devastating impact on the lives of young Africans, and an epidemic of compulsive gambling that makes him question his own betting habits.

  3. The profits go into HIs pockets, they are suffering and will suffer more. The amount of greed is beyond me

  4. In Islam it is forbidden to gamble. The verses came gradually illustrating that it is not good and then that it is harmful and then forbid it.

Some of these verses are below.

The meaning of one verse is:

“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “The excess [beyond needs].” Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.”

    [Quran 2:219]

The position of Islam on gambling was made clearer through another verse, which means:

“O who you believe! Intoxicants (e.g. alcohol) and gambling and idols and (lottery by) arrows are an abomination of Satan’s work, so avoid them so that you may get salvation. Satan’s only desire is to create among you enmity and hatred by means of intoxicants and gambling and stop you from praying and remembering Allah. Will you not then desist?”

    [Quran 5:90-91]

  5. Poverty and no jobs make people to be loosers in all ways and those who win are those who put these people in trouble by cheating.

  6. 99.9% of everyone who gamble, have gambled off either their future, houses, marriage and destinies.
Check this out. If a brick cost $1, 20000 bricks will cost $ 20000.
How much do you bet a day, a week,a month and a year?
This goes with smoking, drinking etc. Make the evaluations and you will be amazed by the results.

  7. Bet only when you have no doubt in your mind and most especially when you deal with the right person jackek192 on IG or WhatsApp on +14253713985 deals with the best odds ever and they deals with fixed matches winning is guaranteed with them

  8. they fall easily for this poorly made marketing, but at least alot of the people betting would without hesitating trade it for their peace and just ban the services, that is alot smarter than european culture 😀

  13. Those guys lack self control and discipline, even if betting goes life will still remain a challenge

  14. They want to ban betting but the conundrum here is not betting rather unemployment meaning those unemployed turn to betting

  15. Actually this is an African problem. Its now happening across Africa. This call for continental investigation and report. South Africa has betting houses on every corner of the street in every city and market place. This is alarming. It feed from desperation, poverty and lack of financial growth. No regulation, no monitoring and no policing of the betting companies. They even use their native country gambling laws. The current African governments are forever in slumber to even notice it. Oh maybe they care more about the tax revenue than their citizens.

  16. Just ask yourself how the bets broker makes his living. It’s not because of all the winners.

  17. Im a die hard football fan for over 20 years, I love sports and a lot of my friends bet. I now appreciate that betting never really appealed to me after seeing it ruin people.

  18. who controls the luck? God? do you think God want you to bet? or invest the same betting money to start your business these are the question we need ask before u go broke…. who told u that people got rich from betting? who created the rumour that some used $5 to win $20,000? these ask the question u need ask yourself..

  19. Why do I feel like Collins addiction can’t just be paused for even a day!😂😂 he makes an incredible journalist tho’

  20. But this guy is only interviewing losers, no single winner was interviewed, very bad. Gambling is a two sided thing, winners and losers, it has made many poor people become multi millionaires and millionaires poor.

  21. he clearly knew he was in the loss in the end in my opinion but he thinks its a ganster thing to loose such an amount in that currency….disgusted..

  22. Gambling is fun, is full of excitement and joys especially when you win. Usually you will share your joy with your family and friends, by buying meals to celebrated or doing something nice together.

They’re only one winner, that’s the house. The house always win….

  23. Man I am from Uganda-kisoro I started betting from that town when I was in high school that was 2010-2011 after passing my A level I wasn’t able to go to university due to lack of tuition I had to cross over to Rwanda as I kept betting in Kigali , I was in 2013 April that I won 3 millions francs equevallent to 12million Ugandan shillings I was able to pay for my university on sport my course costed me roughly 2 millions and I was able to graduate by 2016 and I had to look for job and I am now earning a good money.
So betting can change life as long as you donot get involved with ignorence. As long as you do everything with with plan and purpose you can make it.

  24. Seeing how much love they have for football is surprising considering how bad East African countries perform in the World cup and AFCON when compared to West or North Africa

  25. The art of winning in betting is playing only on educated guess and not on simple gambling. And also you shouldn’t have any biased views while gambling .

Although it’s easy saying , inculcating this takes time and losses

  26. The worst thing than can happen to you when you start gambling is to actually win, the hooks are in at that point.

  27. Its going to be the next 5 years of hopelessness and despair for Uganda..Museveni has just won elections to extend his decades of single man run and Africa will never rise under old guard dictators.

  30. Want to make money with opening a betting company, try India, my friend says in their version of a Superbowl in cricket, the whole city of Mumbai is emptied imagine. This is a daemon that needs to be killed because it has killed many lives. The betting/casino industry is the biggest now even bigger than oil.

  31. As a professional gambler i just want to leave my 2 cents:
There are 2 ways you can go about gambling: doing it for money and doing it for fun.
If you do it for fun, obviously you shouldnt depend on winning. Place a few dollar so you can enjoy the thrill of the game a little more; be happy if you win but dont miss your next rent if you lose (low stakes). If you are doing it for money, make sure you are actually making money. Dont depend on it before its actually profitable.
And most importantly for both scenarios: Choose the right place to bet. Bookmakers tweak the orders in their favour and if you still manage to be profitable, they ll just ban you. Even if its just casual betting for fun, there is no need to get scammed by a bookmaker. Bet on exchange markets.

  32. Kinda sad to think about that they are risking their money and the highest ammount they win its max 270 while i win weekly over 500$ from giveaways xd without risking any money

  33. Wow Collins deserves an award this documentary is so informative even here in South Africa people bet their whole salaries. I joined Hollywood bets last week i just deactivated my account thanks to you.. Hope this reaches people far and wide

  34. BBC need to do an alternative documentary on how these betting companies run and operate in developed nations this could be a serious racketeering and fraud scheme on a large scale in poor Africa

  35. so unemployment basically big business and we have more betting shops in African countries than we do banks that regulate use and inflow/ outflow of money

  36. Very predatory government. I am interested in how this plays out in the upcoming elections. The people will have to take a stand against exploitation.
