High Definition is the favourite for today’s Irish Derby as trainer Aidan O’Brien seeks a record-extending 15th victory in the race.

Epsom Derby second Mojo Star, Irish 2000 Guineas winner Mac Swiney and Dante Stakes champ Hurricane Lane are also prominent players in Paddy Power’s betting market – but who are our pundits and tipsters backing for glory in the third Classic of the Irish Flat season?

Timeform: “HIGH DEFINITION looked a colt of rare promise when going unbeaten in 2020 and can confirm himself a top-class colt now he gets the chance to tackle 1m4f and give Aidan O’Brien a fourth win in the past five runnings. Hurricane Lane didn’t look at ease at Epsom yet still finished third to stable-companion Adayar so is sure to be on the premises, with Mac Swiney and Van Gogh right in the mix too.”

Brendan Duke: “My pin has fallen on LONE EAGLE. This progressive sort took his form to a new level in Goodwood last time out. It’s possible that he just handled conditions best that day. The ground was soft, and it was very windy. I’m going to take a kinder interpretation. He looks a very strong stayer, and comprehensively turned Sandown Classic Trial form around with the second Yibir.”

Matt Chapman: “I’m all over HIGH DEFINITION for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. The great, big, colt looked good in his first two runs and then ran third behind Hurricane Lane in the Dante at York. Everything about that run suggested that with this trip and with the experience under his belt he should reverse that form and finally show us what he can do at the top level.”

Jason Weaver: “MOJO STAR ran a massive race in the Epsom Derby when completely overlooked in the market at around 50/1. Just when the eventual winner Adayar was making his challenge, Mojo Star was momentarily trying to squeeze through a very tight gap and that would have hindered his momentum in the latter stages, when the winner zipped up the fence.”

Ruby Walsh: “High Definition was set to go to Linfield, but had a blood abnormality. He was fourth in the Dante at York in May, but you can be assured he’ll be better at the Curragh on Saturday. That might be enough for him to win as there isn’t much between the others around him. I just can’t get away from HIGH DEFINITION!”
