We investigate a winning NHL betting strategy that answers the following question:

When a National Hockey League team goes through a streak of games where they allow many goals, should we bet or fade them in their following game?

As a contrarian, I would tend to BET the team whose defense has been cold recently. Will the data support my intuition?

We come up with one specific system whose expected profit per season totals 3.07 units!!! Hence, if your average bet is $100 you can expect to earn $307 per year. Its ROI (Return On Investment) over seven full seasons was 10.4%.

The betting strategies are obtained via a thorough statistical study based on nine full NHL seasons of data (more than 10,000 games).

  1. Thank you for the video, professor. Do you plan to re-evaluate your systems after each season to include new data?
