The field jump in the 2019 Thyestes Chase

The Goffs Thyestes Chase is always one of the races of the season in the Irish National Hunt calendar. It attracts some high-quality runners and this year is set to be no different with some familiar names heading for Gowran Park.

Set for Thursday the 27th of January, Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins have dominated recent renewals. Coko Beach of the Elliott stable won this last year and may well turn up again this week.

However, there is one horse that has been heavily backed in the last few days. Trained by Martin Brassil who trained Numbersixvalverde to victory in this race in 2005, he knows what it takes.

Longhouse Poet

Longhouse Poet was 25-1 for the race just a few days ago but is now favourite with some firms at 5-1 in the betting. There is still some 7-1 available if you shop around. That is a hell of a punt in the ante-post markets so someone somewhere is clearly expecting a massive run.

Third in a Grade 1 over hurdles behind Envoi Allen in 2020, he was beaten just two lengths into third in a Grade 1 behind Latest Exhibition at Leopardstown that same season so has high-class form in the book.

He got off the mark over fences at the fourth time of asking when beating Run Wild Fred at Punchestown in December 2020. That form has worked out to be hugely strong as that horse since won the Troytown, was second in a Grade 1 and is the current favourite for the National Hunt Chase and is a market leader for the Aintree Grand National.

Longhouse Poet was heavily back on his return to action after a year on the sidelines. Sent off an 11-2 chance for a valuable Limerick handicap over the Christmas period, he made no impression and finished seventh.

He will absolutely have to leave that run well behind but given it was his first run off the back of a lengthy absence, he should strip much fitter now and looks potentially well treated.
