Lionel Messi has competition to keep his hands on the Ballon d’Or as the ceremony returns next month following the cancellation of last year’s event.
The PSG forward and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo have had a stranglehold on the award in the modern era, winning all but one between them between 2008-2019, with only Luka Modric’s run to the World Cup Final in 2018 interrupting the dominant pair of forwards.
Messi was back on top of the podium when the awards were last held in 2019 and is now a hot 4/11 favourite to extend his record by taking home the gong for the seventh time.
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski however isn’t without support in the market and has shortened into 10/3 from 9/2 since he was unsurprisingly confirmed on a 30-player shortlist this week.
Bet on the Ballon d’OR, HERE.
The Premier League is represented by 14 nominees and Jorginho is the likeliest candidate from the English-based contingent according to the betting having played every minute of both Italy’s Euro 2020 final win over England and Chelsea’s Champions League victory over Manchester City.
He is the 6/1 third favourite ahead of Ronaldo, who is a 12/1 shot from 14/1 to match Messi’s haul of six Ballon d’Ors after adding to his record international tally with a hat-trick on Tuesday against Luxembourg.
Lewandowski has emerged as the strongest challenger – at 10/3 from 9/2 we’re definitely not ruling out his incredible numbers being recognised this time round.
